Weathered mortar raked out and refilled along ridges, hips and verges to stop water getting in and keep the tiles secure.
The mortar holding ridge, hip and verge tiles in place weathers away over the years. Once it cracks and drops out, water gets in behind it and the tiles themselves work loose, which is when they start coming off in high winds.
Repointing refills the outer part of the joints where the old mortar has worn away. It stops water getting in and restores the structure of the ridge or verge, usually for a fraction of the cost of re-bedding the whole line.

If the ridge tiles are still firmly bedded, repointing is enough. If they are loose, they need lifting and re-bedding. We check each tile before we quote.
